The Norwegian Cruise Line and Freestyle Cruising

Ever heard of freestyle cruising in a Norwegian Cruise?

Freestyle cruising happens to be one of the most in-things in the island-hopping industry. It is considered as an intercontinental cruising characterized by a free spirited approach to enjoying a trip across the world’s great open seas. If you’re one of those who never thought such a vacation existed, read on.

Freestyle cruising allows guests and passengers in any of the lines’ state-of-the-art ships to exercise complete control over their stay on the floating resorts. Passengers can choose when they want to eat, where they want to eat, or how they want to eat. Dining on a Norwegian Cruise is nothing like any other line because it boasts of no set dining times, no dining partners, no dress codes, and offers a wide selection of restaurants and dining rooms on board every ship for the type of cuisine that suits your every mood.

Living accommodation arrangements can be made freestyle too, with Norwegian Cruise’s wide array of accommodations from the largest suites to extraordinary villas to interconnecting suites and staterooms that virtually fit any group size. The line’s complex of villas and deluxe owners’ treats have been aptly dubbed as having your own ship inside a ship. These accommodations offer luxurious and spacious rooms, world-class hotel type bathrooms, sundeck, pool, exercise area, and a dedicated butler all conveniently located on a private deck of the ship.

Try a Spirit of Tasmania Trip For Some Adventure on the High Seas

From the Australian mainland, you can fly To Tasmania in less than 2 hours. Why take 9-11 hours to get there by sea?

Well Greg (my husband) and I decided that we wanted to experience a Spirit of Tasmania trip at least once, so we went online and made a booking. We booked about a couple of months in advance. We went with “Ocean View Recliners” since they sounded pretty comfy.

You can take a vehicle along with you on the ship. However we had arranged to pick up a pre-booked rental car on arrival in Tasmania.

We were dropped off at the Port Melbourne terminal around 7.30am. The departure was scheduled for 9am. It was so thrilling to see the Spirit of Tasmania I waiting there for us.

First impressions

On first boarding we found ourselves at the foot of an escalator. It sure seemed like we were in a building rather than on a ship! We explored the surrounds – found the eateries, bars, shops, cinema, games room and just made sure we knew how to get around. There was even a children’s playroom where some little ones were already having a good old time!

Unforgettable Gordon River Cruise at Strahan

I will never forget visiting Strahan and taking a Gordon River Cruise. Strahan is situated on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia’s beautiful island state.

For a town with a population of around 700, I was surprised to find that the town centre was very touristy. The upside is that you do not need to search too far for information on attractions. It’s readily available right along the main street.

We boarded the Gordon River cruise boat around 9am. From Strahan, the boat travelled at high speed to the harbour entrance, known as Hells Gates. Where did this name come from? Well convicts heading for the Sarah Island penal settlement had to pass this way. And this was the name they came up with, in anticipation of what life was going to be like for them. Sounded pretty grim all right…

At Hells Gates our cruise boat left the safety of the harbour and travelled out into open sea for a little while. This allowed us a brief taste of the Roaring Forties, the notoriously powerful westerly winds found between 40 and 50 degrees latitude. And this is exactly where Tasmania is located.
