The Calgary Stampede – Come and Be a Cowboy

Mention Calgary, Alberta to many people around the world and often you will get a look of recognition and an animated story about an adventure that they had there at a Stampede many years ago.

The ten day long Calgary Stampede draws more than 1.2 million people to the festival every year from all across the globe. Its long standing tradition of displaying the cowboy arts goes all the way back to 1912 and has grown to be the largest outdoor rodeo in the world.

When you think about western culture most people think about the American Wild West, which might make you wonder why Calgary of all places would host such a large event based in cowboy culture. However, for those of us who’ve had a healthy dose of Canadian history from school, it is no surprise. Those not raised here might not realise that Canada was full of cowboy culture from at least the mid-1800s.

Shining a Light on England's Black Country

The wind was biting cold and a gray pallor coated the industrial city of Dudley where nail making, iron and steel, and coal mining once drove everyday life. This is the land of the working man, woman and child of England’s past, a history of great contrast between rich, and poor and the north and south of this powerful island nation. Dudley is tucked into the midlands and is generally off the beaten path for tourists. It is, however, a unique culture and landscape worthy of visiting. Certainly, the Black Country Museum is an attraction that in itself, puts the region on the map for tourism.

It was perhaps the perfect weather for our trip to the Museum because it was easy to imagine the hardship and meager existence of people who built the industry that fueled England’s growth at a dear personal price. At least 40 buildings – humble abodes, cottages and shops where people plied their trades – have been moved to this 10 hectare (about 26 acres) site in an effort to preserve the distinct local history that endowed the museum with its name. It is said that in the mid-19th century smoke from the factories and mills filled the air with particles so dense the sun barely shone through, and every surface was coated with a dusting of dull, sooty black. However, coal, iron and industry were indigenous to the Black Country from as early as the 16th century – and the deepest and thickest seam of coal and iron in Great Britain lies beneath its surface.

Reasons to Live in Beaufort, South Carolina

When talking to clients about living in Beaufort, I am always interested to learn the various reasons they have for moving to (or remaining in) Beaufort. During my years in the area I have probably heard hundreds of reasons, but in this article I’ve decided to narrow it down to the top ten reasons to people love to live in Beaufort:

1. “I love Activities on the Water!” With all the beaches, rivers and tidal creeks that lie in the Beaufort area, we often have to ask clients what kind of water activities they’re looking for. Beach-goers love Hunting Island State Park for it’s beautifully secluded beaches and picnic areas. If you’re looking for seclusion, then maybe private beaches like Fripp Island or Harbor Island. Boaters who love to cruise or fish beware. Beaufort has so many inlet rivers and tidal creeks, you could have trouble exploring them all in a lifetime.

2. “We love this Quiet Little Town.” I might hear this more than any reason people live in Beaufort. There are two types of Beaufortonians. The first is born and raised here. The second has moved here. No matter which, they all agree that they love the small town feel. In a time where most areas have far too much urban sprawl, Beaufort remains relatively unspoiled. I cannot count the clients that have moved from larger cities such as Atlanta and Charlotte. Big time development and gridlock traffic is something we here certainly don’t miss.

Altea a Tranquil Vacation Alternative

The Costa Blanca area on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Spain is a hot spot for travelers to and from Europe. Ever since the concept of the Costa Blanca was developed by the British European Airlines as a way to spotlight this beautiful area and the airline’s new flight from London to the Alicante Airport, the Costa Blanca region has been a successful player in the tourism game. Millions of people flock to the south of Spain from all over the world yearly, and particularly from Great Britain, Germany and the Scandinavian countries.

Altea is a city located to the north of the very popular tourist area of Benidorm and to the south of Denia. It is an historic city filled with blue mosaic tile domed churches, whitewashed houses and tranquil natural surroundings. It is a beautifully landscaped region, with quaint shops and restaurants, and peaceful beaches. The climate is also mild year round, thanks to the bordering mountains that block the northern winds and warm Mediterranean Sea breezes.

It is considered a well-placed village, very respectful of its natural environs. It is a getaway for many of Europe’s so called elite traveling class, from the artists to celebrities and writers. These elites enjoy the old neighborhood surrounding the church with international and local cuisine served in the restaurants. Even the most modern part of the town located at the foot of the town’s hill has been built with respect to a less modern age of architecture.

Finding Fun in Tauranga, New Zealand

Tauranga City, New Zealand. If you’ve never been there then you are really missing out. I don’t say this about just any old place. If you’ve never sat on top of ‘The Mount’ watching the sun rise or had a cold beer on ‘The Strand’ then you should get in a plane, train or automobile and get there as soon as possible! You can find Tauranga on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It was once a small coastal community but now boasts the title of New Zealand’s fifth largest city only after Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton. Driving in from the north on top of the Kaimai mountain range you’ll get your first glimpse of Tauranga harbour and Mauao, Mt Maunganui’s famous dormant volcano which is popular with tourists and locals alike.

Tauranga is more of a sprawling city with shopping centres located in suburbs instead of concentrated in one area in the CBD. With a population of 120,000 traffic can get pretty busy (although still nothing compared to Auckland’s gridlocked nightmare), so make sure you allow plenty of time during peak hour. If you’re looking for fun activities then you’ve come to the right place. From Tauranga you can take a dolphin safari, swimming with these beautiful mammals. Go windsurfing, surfing, parasailing, hang gliding, micro lighting, skydiving and base jumping from the top of Mauao just to name a few adrenaline pumping activities.

Las Vegas Area Destinations – Red Rock Canyon

This destination will be the perfect day get away on your next vacation to Las Vegas, Nevada. Spend the day or morning and be back enjoying the entertainment downtown by afternoon. Located approximately 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is a perfect day trip for your Las Vegas vacation. Red Rock Canyon features a scenic drive that loops through the scenic canyon area, miles of hiking trails for a beginner or a seasoned veteran, a vast array of climbing opportunities, and many other activities for the whole family.

The scenic drive is around 13 miles in length and has pullouts and parking areas at all of the main attractions. Picnic areas are located just off of the asphalt surface. This is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the area without a lot of physical exertion. There are 22 named trails in the area. My favorites are the Calico Hills and the Lost Creek Children’s Discovery Trail.

Calico Hills is an easy trail along the base of the towering fossilized sand dunes that comprise the Calico Hills. I cannot think of the correct adjectives to describe the views along the trails. Brilliant red intermingled with traditional sandstone coloring rising above you. The green vegetation along the bottoms and suspended along the slopes and ravines. This is not a steep trail, with the exception of the hike to and from the parking areas.
