The Small Village of Goathland, North Yorkshire
The small village of Goathland, North Yorkshire, England lies in the Scarborough district of the county itself. With a population near 500 people, it is tiny, quaint and very attractive looking. It also lies in the North York Moors national park, which features one of the largest areas of what is called heather moorland and covers about 550 square miles.
Goathland benefits from having a rail station of the North Yorkshire steam railway system, complete with steam locomotives. The village itself has a history that goes back to the days of the Viking invaders, and sits about 500 feet above sea level. During the 19th century, Goathland enjoyed some popularity as a spa town, whose waters were believed to have healing properties.
The village enjoys a strong tourist base, sitting as it does among verdant greenery and attractive stone footpaths. There is also a nearby waterfall, the Mallyan Spout, which contributes its name to a popular hotel in the village. Goathland, in fact, has several such lodging establishments within its boundaries, including a number of small guest houses.
